Description
What the H3 buffer does
The H3 is a 5.4 oz carbine buffer that raises the reciprocating mass of the bolt carrier assembly. More mass slows the cyclic rate, softens the impulse the shooter feels, and keeps the carrier forward marginally longer at the end of its travel. On an over-gassed or suppressed AR-15 that is usually the difference between a rifle that runs violently and one that runs smoothly.
Why forced reset triggers need one
An H3 buffer is strongly recommended with the Triggered Company Disruptor. A forced reset trigger depends on carrier timing: the carrier has to stay forward long enough for the trigger to complete its reset before the next cycle begins. Too little reciprocating mass is the single most common cause of a dead trigger on a forced reset build. A minimum H2 is required; an H3 is what we recommend for carbine-length gas systems and 16-inch or shorter barrels.
Eliminating bolt bounce
Light buffers let the carrier bounce off the barrel extension after it closes. The three heavy internal slugs in this buffer move a fraction of a second behind the buffer body and arrest that rebound, in the same way a dead-blow hammer kills recoil. The result is a carrier that is fully seated and locked when the trigger breaks.
Running a suppressor
A suppressor raises back pressure and accelerates the carrier. Adding buffer mass compensates for that without needing to re-tune the gas system, which is why an H3 is a common first step on a suppressed carbine.

Installation
The H3 drops into a standard carbine receiver extension in place of the existing buffer. Depress the buffer retainer, remove the old buffer and spring, and seat the H3 with the same spring. No tools beyond a punch are required. See the H3 buffer install guide for step-by-step photos.
Frequently asked questions
Will an H3 work with a rifle-length buffer tube?
No. This is a carbine-length buffer. A 20-inch A2 rifle build uses a rifle buffer and rifle extension instead.
Do I need a new buffer spring?
Not usually. The H3 pairs with a standard carbine spring. If the rifle is short-stroking after the swap, the gas system rather than the spring is normally the cause.
Can I use an H3 without a forced reset trigger?
Yes. Many shooters run an H3 purely to reduce felt recoil and slow the cyclic rate on an over-gassed carbine.
Is an H2 enough for the Disruptor?
An H2 is the minimum. An H3 is recommended, particularly on 16-inch and shorter barrels where the gas impulse is sharper.
