Which BCG Should You Run With a Forced Reset Trigger?
Quick answer: Run an M16-profile bolt carrier group. The Triggered Company Disruptor product page lists an M16-profile BCG as required, not just recommended. The M16 profile keeps the full rear section of the carrier body that semi-automatic carriers machine away. That gives the carrier the sear-trip geometry and extra reciprocating mass a forced reset trigger relies on for consistent timing. Our M16-profile BCG is a fully assembled, black nitride carrier for AR-15, M4 and M16 builds in 5.56 NATO / .223 Remington, priced at $139.95.
Why the bolt carrier matters on a forced reset trigger
A forced reset trigger uses the bolt carrier’s movement to drive the trigger forward into reset after each shot. That makes the carrier part of the trigger’s timing system, not just a part of the upper. If the carrier is the wrong profile or too light, typical symptoms include:
- A trigger that doesn’t reset consistently
- A “dead” trigger after a shot
- Bolt bounce and erratic cycling
The Disruptor product page notes that too little reciprocating mass is the most common cause of a dead trigger on a forced reset build.
M16-profile vs semi-automatic profile carrier
| M16-profile carrier | Semi-automatic profile carrier | |
|---|---|---|
| Rear of carrier body | Full material shelf retained | Material machined away |
| Sear-trip geometry for forced reset timing | Preserved | Not present |
| Mass and bearing surface | More mass, longer bearing surface | Lighter |
| Disruptor compatibility | Listed as required on the Disruptor product page | Prone to inconsistent reset |
How to tell which one you have: Remove the carrier and look at the bottom rear of the carrier body. A semi-automatic carrier has a section cut away there. An M16-profile carrier keeps the full rear profile.
What to look for in an M16-profile BCG
- The M16 profile itself. This is the non-negotiable part for a Disruptor build.
- Finish. A salt bath nitride (black nitride) finish hardens the surface layer of the steel rather than adding a coating on top. Compared with phosphate, it’s more corrosion resistant and wipes clean more easily.
- Fully assembled and drop-in ready, so there’s no fitting required.
- Caliber match. The carrier must match your upper. Ours is for 5.56 NATO / .223 Remington.

How to install a new BCG
Remove the takedown pin and separate the upper from the lower. Pull the charging handle and old carrier to the rear and out, then insert the new carrier the same way. No fitting or gunsmithing is needed. If you’re installing the Disruptor at the same time, follow the Disruptor install guide and do the manufacturer’s unloaded function check before any live fire.
Carrier and buffer work together
The carrier is one half of the reciprocating mass. The buffer is the other. The Disruptor’s published buffer requirement is a minimum H2 buffer (H3 recommended) for carbine extensions and 16″ or shorter barrels, and a standard rifle buffer for 20″ A2 stocks. A correct carrier won’t fully make up for a buffer below that minimum, or the reverse.
Buying the BCG with the Disruptor
If you don’t have a Disruptor yet, the Disruptor product page offers a Trigger + M16 BCG package with a black nitride M16-profile bolt carrier group. That’s also where you choose the selector; the Ambi Disruptor is the configuration currently offered. If you already own a Disruptor, the M16-profile BCG is sold separately.
Caring for a nitride carrier
Maintenance is the same as for any BCG, with less scrubbing. Wipe carbon from the bolt tail and carrier interior, inspect the gas rings and extractor spring periodically, and lubricate the bearing surfaces before use. Clean, lubricated parts matter even more on a forced reset build, because fouling and dry surfaces are common causes of inconsistent reset.
A note on 9mm and other calibers
Our M16-profile BCG is a 5.56 NATO / .223 Remington carrier. Disruptor compatibility on 9mm AR builds varies by build. Call us at (623) 252-9593 before ordering for a pistol-caliber platform.

Frequently asked questions
What BCG do I need for a forced reset trigger?
An M16-profile bolt carrier group. The Triggered Company Disruptor product page lists it as required, not just recommended, because it provides the sear-trip geometry and extra reciprocating mass forced reset triggers rely on for consistent timing.
Will a semi-automatic carrier work with the Disruptor?
It isn’t recommended. A semi-automatic carrier lacks the rear material that provides the sear-trip geometry and mass a forced reset trigger relies on, so builds with a semi carrier are far more prone to inconsistent reset.
How do I know if my carrier is M16-profile?
Look at the bottom rear of the carrier body. A semi-automatic carrier has a section machined away there. An M16-profile carrier keeps the full rear profile.
Is an M16-profile carrier legal in a semi-automatic rifle?
Our M16-profile BCG product page states that the carrier profile is not a regulated component and doesn’t, on its own, change how a semi-automatic rifle fires. Laws vary, so confirm the rules where you live. This is not legal advice.
Does the M16-profile BCG come with a charging handle?
No. It’s the bolt carrier group only, fully assembled and ready to install.
Why black nitride instead of phosphate?
Nitriding hardens the surface layer of the steel itself. Compared with phosphate, it resists corrosion and harsh solvents better, sheds carbon more easily for cleaning, and gives a slicker bearing surface.
Will the M16-profile BCG work in a 9mm AR?
No. Our M16-profile BCG is for 5.56 NATO / .223 Remington. Disruptor compatibility with 9mm builds varies, so call (623) 252-9593 before ordering for a pistol-caliber platform.
